EC announces bypolls for four seats, including Mamata Banerjee’s Bhabanipur
New Delhi : The Election Commission on Saturday announced that bypolls in four constituencies, including West Bengal’s Bhabanipur from where Mamata Banerjee is likely to fight, will be held on September 30.
It announced bypolls for Jangipur, Samserganj and Bhabanipur seats in West Bengal and Pipli in Odisha. The polls will be held on September 30 on all these seats.
The decision was taken after the Chief Secretaries of Odisha and West Bengal informed that COVID-19 situation is under control, and gave a green flag to polls.
The West Bengal Chief Secretary also told the EC that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is not a member of the legislature currently, intends to fight from Bhabanipur. He also told the Commission that if the bypolls are not held, it may lead to a constitutional crisis in the state.
West Bengal Agriculture Minister and Bhabanipur MLA Sobhandeb Chattopaddhyay had resigned from the Assembly to make way for Banerjee after she lost Nandigram to Suvendu Adhikari of BJP.
The last day of nomination for the bypolls would be September 13, and the last date for withdrawal will be September 16. Counting will be done on October 3.
