Odisha’s Cultural Canvas: Tableau Sparks Optimism for Republic Day Parade Inclusion

Bhubaneswar: The tableau from Odisha appears poised to finally make its mark on the Kartavya Path in New Delhi this Republic Day, following three consecutive years of rejection. Crafted by the skilled hands of renowned sculptor Kirti Kishore Maharana and painter Gajendra Sahu, the tableau tells a vivid story of Odisha’s cultural richness, with a special focus on the Raghurajpur craft village and the empowerment of women.

The tableau, which faced rejection in the past, has now gained favorable attention in the selection process. Out of the 20 entries submitted for approval, the Odisha tableau reportedly secured a commendable third place. However, the final decision on its inclusion in the Republic Day parade is still pending.

The artistic creation by Kirti Kishore Maharana and Gajendra Sahu captures the essence of Odisha’s cultural tapestry. Raghurajpur, a renowned craft village in the state, takes center stage, showcasing the intricate artistry and traditional craftsmanship that defines the region. Additionally, the tableau conveys a powerful message on women empowerment, aligning with contemporary societal values.

A notable addition to the visual spectacle is a Sambalpuri song, enriching the overall experience and reflecting the diverse cultural heritage of Odisha. The inclusion of this musical element has resonated positively with the selection panel, further enhancing the tableau’s appeal.

The selection process, overseen by an expert committee comprising eminent individuals from various disciplines such as art, culture, painting, sculpture, music, architecture, and choreography, is directed by the Ministry of Defence. Despite facing rejection in previous years, the Odisha tableau has now garnered significant appreciation during the selection meeting.

Gajendra Sahu, one of the creators behind the tableau, expressed optimism regarding its potential inclusion in the Republic Day parade. The positive reception from the selection panel has fueled hope that the Odisha model might secure a coveted spot on the Kartavya Path this year.
