Bhubaneswar: Congress today demanded a judicial inquiry into the police excesses of ‘’innocent ‘’ student Congress activists during a protest rally in the state capital on Friday.
Odisha Pradesh Congress Media Chairman Ganeswar Behera, senior Congress leader Tara Prasad Bahinipati and others at a press conference here condemned the brutal attack on students congress activists peacefully holding demonstrations.
The Congress leaders demanded the Police Commissioner to tender an apology for the police excesses and stern action against the police personnel who trespassed into the Congress Bhawan and attacked the Congress activists with lathis. Describing the Police action as unfortunate and shocking they demanded a judicial inquiry into the police excesses.
The Congress leaders said democracy in the state has collapsed and the constitutional rights of the citizen have been throttled during the Naveen Patnaik government.
The BJD government has launched a campaign to suppress the opposition by using the Police force who attacked the Chhatra Congress activists coming from various parts of the state to gherao the state Assembly. Several Chhatra Congress activists were alleged to have been seriously injured when the police resorted to the lathi charge.
Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash said the Police chased the student congress activists after they attacked police, threw eggs and tomatoes at the police and attempted to set a Police vehicle on fire.
The chhatra Congres activists were demanding justice for Mamita, sacking of the Minister of state for home Dibya Shankar Mishra, filing of a murder conspiracy case against the Minister and the entire incident be inquired by a SIT monitored by the Odisha High Court Chief Justice.
