Army Sports Complex Named after Neeraj Chopra
Odisha: The Indian Army felicitated Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra by naming the sports complex in Udaipur Military station as Neeraj Chopra Sports complex.
The javelin thrower is a junior commissioned officer in the Indian Army. Neeraj had made the entire nation proud by winning Gold in the Tokyo Olympic Games with his best throw of 87.58m.
Taking to Twitter, Neeraj expressed his gratitude over the felicitation and wrote, “Glad to spend time with my battalion yesterday. I hope they continue to reach new heights, and wish them and every member of Indian Army an advanced Happy Diwali.”
This is not the first instance when a sports complex has been named after Neeraj. In August, following his remarkable achievement, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh named a stadium after him in the Army Sports Institute in Pune.
The 23-year-old young athlete, who currently is ranked second according to world athletics, had also won golds at 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia and Asian Games in Indonesia. Before making his debut in the senior category, Neeraj had won Gold in U20 World Athletics Championship 2016 in Poland. After taking a short break after the Olympic win, Neeraj returned to training last week.
Informing his return for training by posting a throwback picture on Twitter, he wrote, “Returned to training this week with the same hunger and desire as before. A throwback to the beginning of the last Olympic cycle is a good place to start! Thank you to everyone for your messages of support.”
