Thiruvananthapuram: BJP National General Secretary Daggubati Purandeswari has termed the posting of selfie on social media by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor with six women MPs as sexist.
Taking to micro-blogging site twitter, Ms. Purandeswari said “Lok Sabha is a sacred place where public issues are debated and decisions are taken.
Unfortunately, Mr. Sashi Tharoor, believes that Lok Sabha is attractive as there are women Parliamentarians. THIS IS SEXIST AND DEMEANS THE HONOUR OF THE HIGHEST HOUSE OF DEMOCRACY!!! ”
Mr. Tharoor representing the Lok Sabha constituency from here courted a controversy on Monday after sharing on twitter the photo of himself with six women MPs, attending the first day of the winter session of Parliament.
He tweeted that “Who says the Lok Sabha isn’t an attractive place to work? With six of my fellow MPs this morning: @supriya_sule @preneet_kaur @ThamizhachiTh @mimichakraborty @nusratchirps @JothimaniMP, https://t.co/JNFRC2QIq1.”
The photo featured Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Supriya Sule, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders Nusrat Jahan and Mimi Chakraborty, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Thamizhachi Thangapandian and Congress leaders Jothimani and Preneet Kaur. The photo was accompanied by a caption, “Who says the Lok Sabha isn’t an attractive place to work?”
Following the criticism, Shashi Tharoor later tweeted that “The whole selfie thing was done (at the women MPs’ initiative) in great good humour & it was they who asked me to tweet it in the same spirit. I am sorry some people are offended but I was happy to be roped into this show of workplace camaraderie. That’s all this is.”
