Kolkata, Dec 21: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal is heading for yet another landslide victory, romping home in 36 seats and leading in 96 others of the 144-ward Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) election as counting is in progress for Sunday’s poll, official sources said on Tuesday.
Early trends showed the TMC is leading and likely to achieve an overwhelming majority in the history of the civic body poll, in which some 63 percent voters cast their votes. The TMC is all set to hold the civic body for the third consecutive term. As the counting progressed the TMC was leading in 96 seats, BJP in five and Left Front in one and Congress in 2 seats.
In the 2015 KMC poll the TMC won in 114, Left had 16, and BJP and Congress had 7 and 5 respectively. Minister Firhad Hakim, who was the face of TMC’s electioneering, said that the opposition had already conceded defeat even before the counting began.
