Lone denounces arrest of mother-daughter, terms it to be highly reprehensible along with violation of democratic norms
Srinagar, Dec 16: J&K Peoples Conference President Sajad Lone on Thursday termed the arrest of a woman and her daughter here as “highly reprehensible and in violation of democratic norms”.
Police arrested the two for allegedly raising anti-national slogans after a recent encounter at Rangreth on Srinagar’s outskirts.
Two militants, including a suspected foreigner associated with Laskhar-e-Taiba, were killed in the encounter at Rangreth on Monday. After the encounter, protests and clashes erupted in the area.
In a statement, Lone strongly condemned the arrest of the mother and daughter. He said this was “highly reprehensible and in violation of democratic norms.
“It is extremely suffocating to live in a place where the government’s sword is perpetually hanging over our heads. This administration has gone berserk and is arresting people by every minute. These actions are in brazen violation of democratic and civilized norms,” he added.
On Wednesday, former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti termed the arrests a “new low” for the administration.
“Arresting women in Kashmir marks a new low for the administration that persecutes civilians only to please their masters in Delhi. The situation is getting worse and instead of reaching out to the people, Government of India is pushing them to the wall,” Mehbooba tweeted.
