Laha Gopalan passes away

Pathanamthitta : Chengara land struggle leader Laha Gopalan, who was undergoing treatment for COVID-19 after testing positive and other ailments, passed away at General Hospital here on Wednesday.

He was 72.

Gopalan retired from Kerala State Electricity Board as an overseer in 2005.

He was the leader of the historic Chengara agitation in which about 300 landless families encroached on nearly 145 hectares of land under Harrison Malayalam Limited’s rubber plantation near Konni on August 4, 2007.

The agitation got National attention and Laha Gopalan was known for his role in the protest to protect the rights of tribal communities in the state.
