Jaya Bachchan’s remark sparks off major verbal spat with treasury bench in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, Dec 20: Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan’s remark sparked off major verbal spat with treasury bench members in the House as discussion on the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Amendment) Bill, 2021 went on.
Raising a point of order under Rule 238, BJP member Rakesh Sinha took strong objection to the remarks made by her and urged the Chair to expunge them.
He alleged that Bachchan’s remarks had cast aspersion on the Chair. He also claimed that her words had degraded the House.
To this, Bhubaneswar Kalita who was in the Chair, said he would look into the records and expunge the remarks if needed.
Standing to speak on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Amendment) Bill, 2021, Jaya Bachchan appealed for justice from the Chair for 12 suspended Opposition MPs.
The Chair, however, repeatedly requested Bachchan to speak on the Bill instead of other issues or replying to other members.
As Bachchan continued she said that there are many important issues to discuss rather than dedicating 3-4 hours to an issue (Bill) which pertains to correcting a clerical error.
As the commotion went on in the House, Jaya Bachchan strongly objected to a ‘personal remark’ made against her by one of the members from the Treasury bench side.
