Kolkata : West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar on Wednesday said he is expecting a call from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the proposed “Khela Hobe Divas”, scheduled to be held on August 16, as some organisations, including “Sanatan Sages” have objected the date citing August 16, would be a grim reminder of the worst communal killings of thousands on Jinnah call of ‘Direct Action Day’ in Kolkata in 1946.
” Their ( Sanatan Sages) only objection was to the date of “Khela Hobe Divas” and sought intervention to convey their feelings to the government. Governor assured them that their feelings would be conveyed to the government,” A Raj Bhavan Twitter handle said.
A group of Sannyasi on Tuesday called on the governor at Raj Bhavan and sought his intervention requesting him to se his good office so that the date of Khela Hobe Divas is not
celebrated on August 16. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was also in the delegation.
“Expect righteous call @ Mamata Official over the date of “Khela Hobe Diwas” Sanatan Sages apprehend that Aug 16’ also known as “1946 Calcutta Killings” as ‘Khela Hobe Diwas” would be a grim reminder of worst communal killings of thousands on Jinnah call of ‘Direct Action Day’ ‘ said the governor.
Mamata Banerjee late last week announced to celebrate August 16 as Khela Hobe Divas (day).
Her government and party will distribute 50,000 footballs to 25,000 clubs in the state. She has also granted Rs 5 lakh each to these clubs.
