DIG CBI Akhilesh Singh given additional charge of Spl Crime Branch probing post-election violence cases in Bengal
Kolkata : DIG CBI Akhilesh Singh, who had been monitoring the cases of Narada,
coal and cattle smuggling, has been given additional charge of special crime branch of the central
probe agency, which is investigating post-poll violence cases across West Bengal.
Meanwhile, CBI’s SIUs swung into action after its four teams arrived in the city to probe the post assembly election result violence cases following a Calcutta High court order to this effect.
A latest report said files of cases from the districts have reached the office of the CBI special
branch in the city. Most of the violent cases happened in five districts of Birbhum, East Burdhaman, East Medinipur, South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas,
On Monday CBI’s five officials went to the home of slain Abhijit Sarkar at Kakurganchi under Beliaghata police station and took the victim’s elder brother Biswajit Sarkar at their office for questioning, sources said on Tuesday.
It was alleged that Abhijit Sarkar, who was an active member of BJP’s labour wing, was
bludgeoned to death on May 2, the day the results of the assembly seats were declared.
Sources said the CBI recorded the statement of Biswajit Sarkar, who may be called for further investigation into the death of Abhijit Sarkar.
The CBI has set up four Special Investigation Units (SIUs) with some 24/25 officials to probe
West Bengal’s post election-result violence cases. Each unit is headed by a joint director level officer,who will be aided by SPs, GSPs, Inspectors, and Sub-inspectors.
The CBI officials, who arrived in this city, have set up camp office at the premises of Port Trust .
The four units are divided into North Zone, South Zone, West Zone and Kolkata.
