Curb Fake News: I&B Ministry

New Delhi: Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Tuesday called upon the Press fraternity to make all out efforts to curb the menace of fake news and fake narrative on the National Press Day. In a video message on his twitter handle, the Minister said the government of India on its part has taken measures like establishment of a fact check unit in the Press Information Bureau (PIB) which is gaining popularity.

“It is our collective responsibility to work against the fake news and fake narrative” he said. The government has focused on citizen-centric communication, in a language they understand and through various platforms they access, be it TV News, Radio, Social Media, or Online Digital Media.

Wishing the media fraternity on the day, the Minister said “The media is a watchdog and a key role to play in a vibrant democracy like India. “National Press Day is a day to reflect upon the role of media and press in raising the issues that matter to the citizens,” he said. Union Minister for Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju also called upon the press fraternity to educate the nation through responsible press.

He also tweeted “The occasion of National Press Day reminds us all that a responsible and dutiful press is the pillar of strength for a nation, and has the duty to aware and educate the nation #NationalPressDay,”.

National Press Day is observed on November 16th every year to acknowledge and honor the Press Council of India, a statutory and quasi-judicial establishment. The day marks the presence of an independent and responsible press in India.
