Kabul : Pakistan’s ISI chief Lt Gen Faiz Hamid arrived in Kabul on Saturday morning on the invitation of the Taliban Council and is set to meet top Taliban leaders, including Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.
The Pakistan’s spy agency Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) chief is heading a delegation of senior officials.
His arrival in Kabul comes ahead of the Taliban announcing formation of their government, with Baradar likely to lead it.
He is reportedly staying at the Serena Hotel in Kabul.
The Taliban’s close links with Pakistan were voiced by a Pakistani minister recently.
Pakistan Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid said, in an interview, Pakistan has taken care of the Taliban for a long time.
“We are the custodians of Taliban leaders. All top Taliban leaders were born in Pakistan. They have got shelter, education, and a home in Pakistan. We have done everything for them. This has been our ‘service’ that we trained them, and many more might be studying,” Rashid told Hum News.
In a statement directly highlighting the links with the Taliban, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi earlier this week said the world must not abandon Afghanistan as that would have dangerous consequences.
“Such a move would have dangerous consequences and no one would be spared,” he said.
