Defence Ministry Bans Import of 2,851 Items To Save Rs 3,000 crore Every Yr: Ministerial Source

New Delhi, Dec 29 : Defence Ministry has notified a list of more than 2,500 imported items which have already been indigenised and 351 imported items which will be indigenised in the next three years, it said in a statement.

The step is part of the efforts to achieve self-reliance in defence manufacturing and minimise imports by DPSUs, the ministry said.

“This Aatmanirbhar initiative will save foreign exchange approximately equivalent to

Rs. 3,000 cr every year. The items will only be procured from Indian Industry after the timelines indicated in the list,” the ministry further adds.

Earlier, two positive indigenisation lists of weapons/platforms/ systems/ammunitions etc were notified by the Department of Military Affairs, in order to provide impetus to self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

Rajnath Singh while addressing the 94th Annual General Meeting of FICCI this month said India cannot depend on other countries for defence technologies due to its stature, its geographical location as well as the security challenges it faces.
