Omicron hits Bengal: 7-year-old boy first to test positive for new variant

Kolkata, Dec 15: The first Omicron case has been reported from West Bengal, with a seven-year-old boy from Murshidabad district testing positive for the Coronavirus variant, health officials said on Wednesday.

The boy, who returned from Abu Dhabi along with his family members, tested positive during a random Coronavirus test conducted at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad near Telangana’s capital Hyderabad.

The boy, a resident of Beniagram village in Farakka block, has been flown to the state and kept in isolation at a relative’s place, Murshidabad district sources said.

Beniagram has been declared a containment area.

A medical officer of Murshidabad said all arrangements have been made for the treatment of the boy at a government hospital if he needs admission.

Earlier, Telangana Public Health Director G Srinivasa Rao told reporters that the boy’s swab samples were taken on Sunday night and sent to the Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, for genome sequencing.

The report received on Tuesday night showed the child was afflicted with the Omicron variant of Coronavirus.
