New Delhi, March 4: India got off to a strong start against Denmark as Ramkumar Ramanathan and Yuki Babhmabri won their matches in the Davis Cup group 1 playoff tie to take a 2-0 lead at the Delhi Gymkhana Club.
This was the first Davis Cup meeting between the two teams since India won 3-2 in Aarhus, Denmark, in 1984. India’s highest-ranked singles player Ramanathan opened the proceedings against Christian Sigsgaard and won 6-3, 6-2. Yuki, who returned to Davis Cup action after four years, registered a contrasting 6-4, 6-4 win over Mikael Torpegaard in the second singles.
The doubles pair of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan will start the day against Johannes Ingildsen and Danish captain Frederik Nielsen on Day 2 and will look to seal seal the tie for India. If Bopanna and Sharan win, then India will make it to the Davis Cup World Group I stage while a loss will drop them into Group II. India has finished runners-up on three occasions 1966, 1974 and 1987 and is yet to win the Davis Cup title.
