Math question aimed at 10-year-old Is Leaving Even Adults Scratching Their Heads

For many people, Mathematics is probably one of those subjects that they are not fond of. Yet, if you have been out of school for too long and forgotten what all the fuss was about this viral question aimed at fifth graders is going to jog your memory.

In light of it, a tricky math exam question that was intended for fifth graders has become popular online after many adults claimed that they were unable to answer it.

The challenging question, meant for students aged between 10 and 11, reads: ”Klein read 30 pages of a book on Monday and 1/8 of the book on Tuesday. He completed the remaining 1/4 of the book on Wednesday. How many pages are there in the book?” The subject line read, ”A test problem on my 5th-grade brother’s math exam.”

The difficulty of the question has also astounded the social media users, with many claiming that they would almost certainly fail the exam if the questions were this difficult. Many users also stated that they were unable to solve the problem, while others attempted to decode it.

“Yeah I thought this was a surprisingly challenging math problem for a 10-year-old but once you have learned algebra it’s really not that tough but good for this curriculum for pushing students thinking and comprehension,” another user wrote.

Meanwhile, some weren’t concerned about mathematics at all. A user commented, “…why didn’t Klein just read the remaining 18 pages on Monday? Klein is lazy.”

A third comment read, “Right? Am I the only one who thinks OP [Original Poster] is a 5th grader posting his homework to Reddit, so people respond with the answer?”
