Odisha PRI Poll Defeat: Squabbles Turn Fatal; Husband Commits Suicide, Wife Under Medication

Bhubaneswar, Mar 15: A failure in Panchayat election and few instances of post poll criticism by winner side, this is what the couple couldn’t overcome. They took to pernicious steps. The husband has allegedly commits suicide by hanging and defeated candidate, Sumati Parida of Bhadrak district, has consumed poison.

Sumati Parida is under medication and recovering with an irreparable personal loss for the rest of her life. As an independent candidate Sumati, had contested and defeated, for the post of Panchayat Samiti member of Basudevpur Block of Bhadrak District. According to sources, on Sunday evening a victory procession was arranged by the the winning candidate and their supporters took place in the village. While the procession was passing near Sumati’s house, some of the winning candidate’s supporters have allegedly teased her.

Following the criticism, Sumati and her husband Ramakanta have allegedly got into an argument over election expenses and the eventual failure. Shortly after the infight, Ramakanta hung himself in his house. He was immediately rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Saddened by her husband’s death and  of guilt conscious,  Sumati reportedly consumed poison on Monday. The villagers immediately rushed her to the Bhadrak hospital. Later, she was shifted to a private hospital in Cuttack where she is still under observation.
