Rajya Sabha Adjourned Over Inflation

New Delhi, July 18: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till Tuesday on day one of the Monsoon Session on Monday as the opposition raised slogans against price rise and GST rate hikes.

Some Opposition MPs trooped to the well of the House raising slogans against inflation.

“As some people have come determined not to allow the House to function and to enable members to go and vote in the Presidential election, I am adjourning the House for the day,” Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu said.

Congress MP K C Venugopal, CPI-M’s Elamaram Kareem and some others gave notices to the Chairman under Rule 267 seeking suspension of business to discuss inflation, GST and the Agnipath scheme.

“The hike in GST of rice, wheat, curd, barley, paneer, hospital rooms and other essential items is an issue of public concern which we tried to raise for debate. As usual the opposition wasn’t allowed to speak which is curbing the voice of people, an intolerable act in a democracy,” Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said in a tweet.

Before the start of the uproar, the Rajya Sabha observed silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the departed members. Chairman Naidu read the obituary references.

Newly elected Rajya Sabha members took oath as the House assembled on Monday.

Naidu described his tenure a learning and testing experience and gave credit to members for good work. He said that he did his best for the effective functioning of the House and was willing to take responsibility if his best was found short of the expectations.

“Dealing with about 245 Members of the House from over 30 parties with different minds, inclinations and ideologies is quite revealing and even a testing experience. I tried to the best of my abilities to draw the best out of all of you,” he said.

The credit for the positives would entirely go to all of you, he added.

“If my best was found to be short of your expectations, I would not hesitate to take responsibility for the same,” he said.
