Lok Sabha Adjourned Over GST Hike

New Delhi, July 19: Opposition MPs staged a protest on Tuesday in the Lok Sabha against the GST hike and demanded a rollback, forcing two adjournments in the House.

Opposition members were on their feet soon after the House met at 11 a.m.. They trooped near the Speaker’s podium with placards demanding the axing of the hikes in the Goods and Services Taxes. The MPs raised slogans against the hike and the government.

Speaker Om Birla tried to continue the Question Hour even as the ruckus continued. But as MPs continued to show placards and raise slogans, he said an important question related to farmers was being raised. Birla also said that bringing placards into the House was against the rules.

“There is an important question on MSP… You talk about farmers outside the House, but not inside… You talk about price rise outside, but don’t wish to discuss it in the House,” Birla said.

He said he allowed discussion on price rise in the last session. Birla then adjourned the House till 2 pm.

When the House met again, similar scenes were again witnessed. The House was then adjourned for the day by the Chair.
