N Korea Fires ICBM: Japan

Tokyo, March 24 : North Korea conducted what appeared to be a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), Japan’s Defence Ministry said on Thursday. The launch came at a time when international attention is on the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict. The launch appeared to be a new type of ICBM. The missile dropped within Japan’s exclusive economic zone after flying for more than 70 minutes, Kyodo News Agency quoted a Japanese Defence Ministry statement as saying. The missile fell in waters about 170 km off Aomori Prefecture. According to the South Korea’s military, a projectile was fired off the east coast of the North. The North has carried out a flurry of ballistic missile tests in violation of the UN Security Council resolutions since the beginning of this year. The missile launch came as Japan, the US and the South are bracing for increased missile activity by the North ahead of a key anniversary on April 15, when the country marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung, its founder and the grandfather of current leader Kim Jong Un. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korea President Moon Jae-in slammed the North for its latest launch.
