Police Baton Charge: PCC demands suspension of DCP

Bhubaneswar: Senior Congress leader and Congress Legislature party leader Narasingha Mishra on Saturday demanded immediate suspension of the Police Officer in charge for the brutal attack on student Congress activists in front of the state Assembly on Friday.

The police he said resorted to lathi charge on the student congress activists who were protesting demanding the ouster of Minister of state for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra for his involvement in the Mamita Meher murder case .

Several Chhatra Congress leaders suffered injuries on their heads and several others have fractured legs and hands after police chased , beat them and used excess force while they were protesting peacefully, Mr Mishra said.

Criticising the DCP Umashankar Dash, for his statement to the media that he did not know whether Police used force against the Chhatra Congress, the Congress leader said he should know what is happening. Mr Mishra said the DCP deserved to be sacked and action should be taken against him.

The Congress leader alleged that Police attempted to break the doors of the Congress Bhawan where workers had taken shelter to escape the police excesses and assaulted them.

A case under Section 307 of IPC, be registered against the Police for entering the office of a recognised national political party and beating the party activists and the controlling officer should be placed under suspension, Mr.Mishra said and demanded compensation to those who suffered injuries in the Police action

Mr Mishra also alleged that said the police resorted to lathi-charge even though Magistrate has not declared the assembly unlawful and asked the crowd to disperse.
He demanded a judicial inquiry and an administrative inquiry into the incident. The Congress he said would move the Odisha Human Rights Commission seeking action against the Police and compensation for the injured.
