Flight services likely from proposed Sri Jagannath International airport in 2022-23: Behera

Bhubaneswar, Jul 5 : Flight service from the proposed Sri Jaganath International Airport is likely to commence from 2022-23, Odisha Commerce and Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera said here on Sunday.


Mr Behera told newspersons here that a team of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has identified a site on the outskirts of the Puri town and he hoped that the Civil aviation ministry would approve it soon.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January this year said Puri has the potential to become a hub for spiritual tourism and economic activities and requested to set up an International Airport in the name of Sri Jaganath .
Later a team of the AAI has identified 1500 acres of land at Sipasurabali in Brahmagiri Mouza in the outskirts of the Puri town for the proposed Airport.
Mr Behera said if everything goes well, the construction of the Airport will be completed in a year and flight service from Puri will commence from 2022-23 under the UDAN scheme.
In addition to it , the state government is in touch with the Civil Aviation Ministry for the development of Airstrips and commencement of flight service from Rourkela, Utkela and Jeypore.
In a tweet the state Commerce and Transport department said development of Airports at #Puri, #Rourkela,#Utkela and #Jeypore discussed. Air Connectivity under #UDAN for Jeypore and Utkela will be finalised by @MOCA.GOI and state government shortly.
The Commerce and Transport department made the tweet following a high level meeting with the senior officials of Ministry of Civil Aviation here yesterday.
